Embrace Lesser Known, Economical Cuts

At Hagen's we embrace a nose to tail approach. That's making sure those secondary cuts are stars of your dinner plate as well. Organising your weekly shop is an art in itself, but with some clever planning and cooking tricks, you can make your money go further without sacrificing flavour or nutrition.

Embracing Economical Cuts:

  • Osso Bucco: This versatile cut is perfect for slow-cooked dishes like stews and curries. It's flavourful and turns incredibly tender when cooked low and slow.
  • Rump Steak: A tasty cut that's great for marinating and pan frying. Whip up delicious fajitas, stir-fries or steak and frites.
  • Pork Shoulder:(Boneless or On the Bone): This cut is a winner for succulent pulled pork. Whether slow-cooked or braised, you'll end up with juicy goodness. It's also ideal for roasts, stews, and carnitas.
  • Chicken Thigh Chop: Dark meat lovers, rejoice! Chicken thighs are not only affordable but also juicy and full of flavour. Bake, stew or grill. They're perfect for stews, curries, and casseroles too.
  • Chicken Drumsticks: These wallet-friendly beauties shine when baked, fried, or coated in delicious sauces. Both kids and adults will be asking for more.

Economical Recipes to Savour:

  • Osso Bucco Ragu:  is a hearty and rich Italian beef stew which utilises the lower part of the hind leg. When braised, the connective tissue rewards you with velvety and tender meat. This recipe is a simple dish that requires a little bit of time on the stove but the result is well worth the wait! Perfect for cooking on a slow Sunday with the kids.
  • Weeknight Beef Stir Fry: This is a weeknight version of your go-to takeaway beef stir-fry, minus the unhealthy amounts of oil and lots of added veg! It utilises our stir fry beef, meaning less work for you! We've added in a secret ingredient to ensure your beef remains nice and tender in the rich and savoury sauce. Serve with hot rice and that's dinner sorted!
  • Slow Roasted Pork Shoulder : The perfect pork shoulder is slow roasted for soft, succulent meat, then blasted with a high heat for crispy crackling. Combine the roasting juices, fennel and apple for a punchy flavour bomb of a jam. We’ve served ours with roast potatoes and salad.
  • Spanish Chicken with Chorizo: It's paired with bone-in chicken thighs, where the skin has been seasoned and the fat is nicely rendered and crispy, tomatoes, oregano and olives. Another bonus, is that it's made in one pot for an easy clean up and can be served with rice or salad and fresh bread.
  • One Pan Chicken with Tomato and Mozzarella: A one pan meal that comes together in under an hour is always a weeknight favourite. It’s a dinner that’ll have everyone smiling. Serve alongside a fresh green salad or seasonal veggies and rice.
