Bultarra Lamb

If you've tried our lamb before, you might have thought - why is this so good? How is it so different?

While much of conventional farming tries to stop natural grazing and confines fed to grain only, Bultarra Australian Saltbush Lambs break away from that norm. These lambs are raised in a natural setting, free to roam and graze on native Saltbush-based land, untouched by pesticides, cropping, or fertilisers. The resulting lamb, available through Hagen's, is all-natural, without added hormones, antibiotics, fillers, or preservatives.

Responsible for this natural approach, is Jamie McTaggart.

Jamie, a devoted father of three and a sixth-generation northern pastoral livestock producer, brings his passion for animals and the land into every aspect of Bultarra Australian Saltbush Lamb's operations. He's actively involved in the industry, serving as the Director of Saltbush Livestock and Saltbush Pastoral Services, as well as the Chairperson of the Dorper Sheep Society of Australia.

Starting this journey after transitioning from Merino sheep in 2001, Jamie has been raising award-winning Dorper lambs in the serene landscapes of Port Augusta West, South Australia. His approach is rooted in organic and regenerative farming principles, with a commitment to gentle handling techniques.

Dorper sheep, originally from South Africa, are a smart choice for sustainable farming practices. They thrive on the water-efficient perennial Saltbush shrub, which suits the arid climate well. Needing minimal intervention, both the sheep and the land are resilient against drought, making them a perfect match for Port Augusta West's unique natural environment, where the desert meets the sea. Their dark pigmentation also provides added protection from the sun's rays.

A notable trait of Dorper sheep is their shedding wool and hair, which means no shearing is needed. This natural feature reduces the need for special care, eliminating chemical treatments and painful procedures like crutching, mulesing, or tail docking that other breeds often require. This creates a low-stress, chemical-free environment that's healthier for the animals and the land.

Additionally, the lambs' exclusive diet of Saltbush gives the meat a unique flavour. Rich in protein and natural minerals, the shrub's robust essence imparts a distinct and highly sought-after taste that appeals to both restaurant diners and customers.

At Hagen's, we honour the spirit of Bultarra Australian Saltbush Lamb, encompassing conscientious farming practices and exceptional quality.
