Beef + Liver Meatballs by Luka McCabe

The easiest way to incorporate both iron and zinc in the most bioavailable way (meaning, the way your baby’s body absorbs the most nutrients) is by feeding your baby meat and animal products as their first foods.

Ingredients:

  • 1 TBSP ghee or coconut oil
  • 1 brown onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
  • 1 packet of Hagens mince and liver blend
  • Small handful of parsley, finely chopped

Method:

  1. Melt the ghee in a frying pan over a low to medium heat and soften the onion and garlic for approximately 10 minutes, then transfer to a plate and leave to cool.
  2. Add to a bowl the mince and liver mix, the parsley and the cooled, cooked onion and mix everything well with your hands until combined.
  3. Form the meat mixture into finger/log shaped log meatballs and place on a large tray. You should make around 15-20 ‘logs’.
  4. Wipe the frying pan clean and turn up the heat to medium high.
  5. Fry the meatballs on all sides until golden and cooked through.
  6. For babies, shape the meatballs into finger-shaped logs, or cut the meatballs into quarters prior to serving, to reduce choking risk. You can find this recipe in Luka’s book, Milk to Meals.
