Turkey is the one people over-order, because the bird looks smaller raw than it eats. A bit of over-ordering is fine. A lot of it means you are eating dry turkey on the 28th.
The short answer
Whole bird, bone in: allow 500g per person.
Boneless turkey roast: allow 250g per person.
Add 100g per person if you want leftovers for sandwiches.
A whole bird weighs more than it feeds
Roughly 1kg of a whole turkey is frame. That is not waste, it is the best stock you will make all year, but it is not meat on a plate.
The boneless roast is all meat and carves in even slices without any skill. It also cooks in about 1.5hr to 2hrs, against up to 3 hours for a whole bird, which matters when the oven is the bottleneck.
Our turkey
Free range turkey from Numurkah. Whole birds are booked with the producer Bendele months ahead, so numbers are limited and they do not get topped up.
Which one to order
Order the whole bird if the bird is the point and someone at the table enjoys carving it.
Order the boneless roast if you want the same thing on the plate without standing over it. It is the one most of our customers order, and the one most of our staff order.
